Henna stains the top layers of skin, so as the skin naturally exfoliates or loses cells, the mehndi body art fades. How long mehndi body art lasts on the skin depends on the quality of the henna paste, the amount of time it stays on the skin, the area of the body decorated with mehndi body art and the skin type. Mehndi tends to last longer on areas that generate more heat, like the hands and feet. However, washing with harsh soaps will cause mehndi body art to fade sooner.

In addition to its cooling properties, several other medicinal properties are attributed to henna. It is used as a coagulant for open wounds. A poultice made with henna leaves works to soothe burns and certain types of eczema.

Creating mehndi designs is actually quite simple and just takes practice to master.

Henna paste is usually applied on the skin using a plastic cone or a paint brush. Often, a small metal-tipped jacquard bottle used for silk painting is used. The painted area is then wrapped with tissue, plastic, or medical tape to lock in body heat, thus creating a more intense color on the skin. The wrap is worn overnight and then removed. The final color is reddish brown and can last anywhere from two weeks to several months depending on the type of the paste. Henna is available at stores in all major cities.
